Can india become skill capital

CAN INDIA BECOME THE SKILL CAPITAL OF THE WORLD

Skills and knowledge are the driving forces of economic growth and social development for any country. It is no surprise that governments globally are focusing on the significant role vocational education and training plays in their countries’ futures. At a time when skills gap is a major concern globally, investing in skill development has never been so important.
Today india is one of the youngest nation’s of the world with 70 percent of its population in the working age group . On July 15 2015 Prime minister Sh Narendre Modi launched the skill india mission and formulated a Ministry of skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) to oversee , implement and coordinate various initiatives . This programme was launched with an aim to train India’s youth in market relevant skills . Soon after this Ministry was set up , it came out with a report that ,less than 5 percent of India’s workforce is formally skilled .Compare this to South Korea with 96 percent , Japan 80 percent, Germany 75 percent , the United kingdom 68 percent and the United States with 52 percent.
In an article published in Khurukshetra magazine by Shri parag Gupta advisor NITI AYOG , About 54 percent of our population is under the age of 35 and close to 15 million enter the workforce every year. The only way enough jobs can be created for such a huge number is by creating an environment for entrepreneurship and innovation , which encourages young people to aspire to become job creators and employers . In the last few years we have worked tirelessly to fill the gap.
Skill development leads to improved productivity , employment , self employment , Economic growth and consequently poverty reduction . Skill development especially in india with its large population assumes greater importance .
SKILLING TO BE MADE ASPIRATIONAL : SKILLING along with vocational education  should be made ASPIRATIONAL , vocational education should be made at par with formal education and must be given more focus . Unfortunately the skill or vocational education is perceived as a preferred option for those who have not succeeded in the formal education system . This must go and efforts to sensitize skilling and  vocational education aspirational should be given priority .
LINKING SKILL TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP :The challenge india faces presently is less availability of highly trained workforce as well as non employability of large sections of the conventionally educated youth , who posses little or no job skills .
To ensure employability our educational/SKILLING curriculum should have a fair dose of entrepreneurship and know how to start one’s own enterprise . Skilling should create not only job seekers but also job creators . Skill development and Entrepreneurship culture needs to be built from the bottom to the top . Schools should have mandatory skill and Entrepreneurship classes .
