JAMIA MASJID Srinagar is one of the oldest and most spacious of all the mosques in Kashmir valley. The beautiful grand mosque which is also known as Shah-e-Hamdan mosque is situated in the heart of Srinagar city --Nowhatta downtown area, on the banks of river Jehlum.The foundation of this architectural wonder  was laid by Sultan Sikander in 1389 AD and the construction of this wonderful and most attractive mosque was completed in 1402 AD

The wonderful aspects and the  attractions of the Jamia Masjid or  Jama Masjid (Locally Known)  of Srinagar Kashmir, include beautiful Indo-Saracenic architecture, a beautiful  courtyard and 370 wooden pillars. The peace and tranquil ambience inside the mosque is another unique feature of this attractive artitecture ,the biggest mosque . standing out against the hustle of the old bazaars around it. Thousands of people congregate here for prayers ,especially on Fridays.
The area of the mosque is 384 ft ×381 ft.spacious enough for over 33,000 people to offer prayers at a time.

The mosque was destroyed many times in fire .it is said that during the reign of Jahangir ,the mosque was gutted in devastating fire that consumed about 12,000 houses in the city .its reconstruction took 17 years.however this beautiful oldest mosque is visited by thousands of people for its beautiful scenic architecture and the kashmiriyat it pours .
