HAZRATBAL SHRINE: Holiest Muslim Shrine in Kashmir 



Hazratbal Shrine (Translation: Majestic place) is the most important Muslim shrine of Kashmir,situated on the left bank of the world famous and globally  known Dal Lake in Srinagar.Hazratbal shrine is  particularly famous as this unmatched reverence is anchored in the ishq ,love and much extraordinary respect for the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) a multi dimensional personality  whose  relic known as the Moi-e-Muqqadas, which is believed by many Muslims of Kashmir to be a hair of Muhammad, the Prophet. The hair has been preserved safely in the shrine and is brought before the general public only on specific occasions.
The states highest seat of learning -the beautiful picturesque University ,the university of Kashmir falls in its close vicinity .the students ,the academicians throng to this beautiful shrine for Prayers. This holy shrine is visited by thousands of people every year for taking blessings .

This holiest shrine is known by many names which include Hazratbal Assar-e-shareef ,Dargah Sharif ,And Madinat-us-Sani. The history of the shrine goes back to the early 17th century when Sadiq Khan ,subedar of the mughal emperor shah jahan, laid out a garden here and constructed a palatial building, ishrat mahal or pleasure house in 1623.However,the Emperor, during his visit in 1634,ordered the building to be converted into a prayer house with some additions and alterations. The construction of the present marble structure was started by Muslim Auqaf trust headed by Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah in 1968 and completed in 1979.
The shrine -A holiest place for all humans is thus considered to be sacred amongst all and attracts thousands of tourists to it from all across the country. People from all walks of life respect and take blessings from it .
